Dark Heresy Bundle on DriveThruRPG

DriveThruRPG have posted an amazing deal on a bundle of Dark Heresy first edition pdfs. As best I can make out this is the entire 1st Edition line for $49.99 which is astonishing value. It includes the core book, bestiary, two 3-part campaigns and tons of sourcebooks.

Dark Heresy is basically “WFRP in Warhammer 40,000”, featuring player characters who are lowly agents of the Inquisition, with a focus on investigative gameplay. It is based on a modified version of the WFRP Second Edition ruleset.

It is my intention to eventually get round to posting some review of Dark Hersey on this blog (probably years away!). Having read through the core rulebook and a handful of other titles some years ago, I think it provides a fascinating window into the world of Warhammer 40k (through the lens of the Imperium of Man), although I felt like the ruleset was a bit complicated compared to 2nd Ed WFRP. It’s also got some incredible artwork throughout 🙂

If you’re interested in more thoughts on Dark Hersey, the blog Refereeing and Reflection posted a couple of posts on Dark Heresy 1st Edition and its supplements.

Check out the bundle hereThis is an affiliate link so I receive a small payment for purchases made using it.

No end date is given for the deal, but I think the similiar WFRP 2e bundle lasted for 2 or 3 weeks.

    1. Good question! From memory, I don’t think it does engage with this – there’s a disclaimer at the beginning about how the game deals with mature themes, but I think that might be it. (Thought it is quite a while since I read it, so it might be addressed elsewhere too.)

I don’t think the game really tries to justify or defend the approach of the Inquisition, it just focuses on the fact that you’re fighting against evil cults. It certainly presents player classes as being pretty screwed up – e.g. Assassins are often members of a death cult, Psyker PCs are ones who *didn’t* get sacrificed by the thousand to sustain the Emperor, etc.

The Inquisition is explicitly described as having loads of different factions and viewpoints, including ones who are trying to be more compassionate than the default.

But nevertheless there’s no getting away from the fact that by default you are playing as servants of this horrific organisation.

I’d be very interested to see how Imperium Maledictum and Wrath & Glory deal with this issue – my impression is that Cubicle 7 generally seem to be much better at engaging with these sorts of issues.
